The letter of intent is a letter notifying a state or county department of education of your intentions to begin a homeschool or home education program. There are many free downloadable templates available online. We offer one in our store.
Before you start to homeschool, you may need to send a letter or notice of intent to your state or county education office. The information you need to include varies from state to state. Start by checking with your state's education department for the exact requirements. Also, make sure to find out if your state requires you to submit this letter at all. For a comprehensive list of what's needed in your state, take a look at our legal page.
Generally, this letter must include the name and age of the student or students that you will homeschool. The letter also needs the date on which you plan to start, your home address, and your phone number. Download a free template from our store.
When you are ready to submit the letter, send it by certified mail. This gives you confirmation that your letter was received. Before mailing out the letter, make a copy for your records. It's very important to keep a copy of the letter which can be kept in your student's portfolio. What is a student portfolio? Click here to find out what it is and how to create one.
