Free & Low Cost Resources

Homeschooling doesn’t have to be expensive. So, browse our list of free or low-cost homeschool resources below. These resources have been used or are still being used by our staff. No compensation is received by us for referring anyone to any of the organizations listed below. We are simply sharing information helpful to us. Likewise, we hope your experience is the same. This page will be regularly update with new information. Please check back periodically.

Math Help

  • Khan Academy – Free lessons and practice exercises are available on this website to help math students in all grades. Additionally, Khan Academy offers some college level math courses and test prep help. You can create linked student and parent accounts. For some students, this resource may only serve as a supplement to a core program.

  • Mathisfun.com – This website offers “mathematics in an enjoyable and easy-to-learn manner.” They have very easy to follow lessons and excellent math tools. For example, there is a multiplication math trainer which works like flash cards to help the student practice their multiplication tables. The purpose of this website is to teach every math concept taught from kindergarten to 12th grade. The lessons and math tools are available for free. So, checkout their website for more information.

  • Purplemath.com – This website provides lessons, practices exercises, and even placement tests for middle, high school, and college students. You need to sign up for a membership to have full access to their material. The cost is relatively low when compared to the cost of purchasing an entire math curriculum. Your membership provides full access to any of the courses they offer, one at a time. So, feel free to check out their website and learn more about how they can help with your math student’s needs. Purplemath records the student’s grades which helps with recordkeeping.

  • Singapore Math – A powerful math curriculum that teaches students how to understand the logic of how numbers and mathematical concepts are used and relate to the world around them. They offer textbooks, workbooks, tests, and teacher guides for each grade level. They now offer video lessons as well. Reasonably priced, Primary Mathematics and Dimension books are available for about $14 each and are also sold in bundles. Many private schools teach their children with Singapore Math. This math curriculum even begins with preschool and goes through Algebra 1.

High School Courses

  • Study.com offers a variety of courses including college courses for college credit. You may find each subject you are looking for to be taught at Study.com.

  • Math and Science classes are offered through live online instruction or self-paced at Dive Interactive Education. They even offer CLEP and AP prep. Self-paced science courses start at $65.99 for 2 years of access to the course material. Math courses start at $99.99. The live courses are offered with limited seating.

  • Apologia is another organization that provides STEM curricula for at home learning through self-paced courses and live courses. Their science student notebook is a great tool for helping your student learn to be an independent learner by teaching them how to take good notes, how to study, and how to write college level lab reports.

  • Saxon Math book homeschool sets can start at around $95 and include grade level textbook, workbook and solution book. They also provide placement tests to make choosing the right math level easier for parents. 

  • Music Instruction: Thomas Daniels offers online and in-person (for Texas students) guitar instruction. He completed musical training in college, is an experienced musician and song writer, and is currently in a band. Tom has been playing guitar for over a decade and has even built a few.   • Khan Academy – As with math, they offer free course material for all grades including some like personal finance that would make great electives for your high schoolers.

Language Courses

  • Spanish Class: StudySpanish.com offers Spanish lessons through different membership levels starting with a free basic membership. The lessons cover grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and includes verb drills.

  • Rosetta Stone has been helping students learn new languages for almost 30 years. You can choose from up to 25 languages and provides a progress report for recordkeeping. Online subscriptions are available for homeschool students at this link. Subscriptions start at $35.97 for 3 months and they even offer a lifetime subscription to lessons on unlimited languages.

Academic Competitions

  • National History Day – This is a history research competition. That may not sound interesting, but the participants present their research in a variety of ways including creating a website or building a visual display. The student can work individually or in a group. More information is available at www.NHD.org.

  • The Stock Market Game – The Stock Market Game is a yearlong or semester long, whichever you prefer or your schedule allows, “game” that students play to learn about the stock market. As a result, they learn key terms and participate in virtual investing to apply what they learn. More information is available at www.stockmarketgame.org.

Preschool & Elementary School 

  • Salt & Light Preschool – Online preschool for 2.5- to 5-year-olds, Salt & Light Preschool offers enrichment classes that your child can take from the comfort of your own home. These classes are aimed at getting your child ready for kindergarten. More information is available at Salt & Light Preschool Online (saltandlightpreschool.com). 

  • Khan Academy – Free video lessons and practice exercises in just about any subject are available on this website to students in all grades. Additionally, Khan Academy Kids will help prepare your preschool to 2nd graders on their free app. For more information on Khan Academy Kids, visit Free, fun educational app for young kids | Khan Academy Kids.   • The Good and the Beautiful (goodandbeautiful.com) offers a phonics reading program, math, science, and history curriculum that is high quality for a low price. Created by a homeschool mom, this curriculum was created with the homeschool family in mind. It's easy to use, budget friendly, and they also have fun educational videos available as supplemental materials.
